Live Marimo Moss Ball (Aegagropila Linnaei)
International Delivery is not available on this item
The Marimo Moss Ball is one of the most interesting and popular freshwater plants available. It requires little-to-no maintenance, does not need food, hardly needs a light source, converts CO2 in your tank into Oxygen that removes harmful toxins, and provides a toy which small fish and shrimp love to play on. Simply take it out of the bag and pop it in your aquarium.
Marimo Moss Balls can be found in large colonies in certain lakes in Japan where it is also designated as a national treasure. Marimo Moss Balls have become very popular in recent years due to their ability to add a drop of colour into any aquarium and due to their innate filtration abilities. This is the perfect item for any aquarium and an excellent starting point for entering the world of live aquatic plants.
In Japan there is a legend dating back to the early feudal period where the son of a tribe leader fell in love with a common girl, much to the tribe leader's chagrin. Having decided to run away together, the pair tragically fell into Lake Akan and sunk to the bottom. At the bottom they slowly turned into Marimo Moss Balls; their love ever true. Since then, Marimo Moss Balls have become a symbol of love, affection and good luck for both the receiver and giver.
Our Marimo Moss Balls are usually 4cm to 6cm in diameter and will grow up to 5mm per year under the right conditions. Marimo Moss Balls can live for up to 200 years and are virtually un-killable*. For more information on the Marimo Moss Ball, please contact us directly.

*Marimo Moss Balls are shipped with next-day delivery in mind, although, they are capable of surviving in a bag for several days. There is no reason why your Moss Ball shouldn't arrive in anything less than perfect condition.
If you encounter any issues with your Marimo Moss Ball, it is imperative that you let us know immediately via phone or email and send us a picture of the issue. If you fail to contact us on the day your plant order arrives we will be unable to offer any credit for it. If your plant arrives in a perished state, do not throw it out, otherwise we will not be able to offer you credit for it as we will wish to see photographic evidence of the issue. Marimo Moss Balls are gently squeezed before packing, this removes some of the toxins which build up in this plant over time. For this reason, your Moss Ball may arrive slightly misshapen. This is normal and the Moss Ball will return to its original shape once placed in water. It is also normal for your Moss Ball to arrive with brown algae on its surface. This brown algae will disappear over time.
Plants can take longer than expected to arrive overseas and we cannot cover for these delays. Temperatures are sometimes hotter or cooler than Ireland and aquatic plants will not appreciate being sent in a box in these types of climates so if you do not want to risk it, buy locally. We cannot be held responsible for plants perishing during extended periods of transit. In extreme weather conditions we may hold an order of live plants until weather conditions improve or become stable.
Marimo Moss Balls will float when first placed in a new aquarium. This is completely normal and does not mean your Moss Ball is 'broken'. Allow 24 hrs for the Moss Ball to sink or hold it at the bottom of your tank and squeeze it. Once waterlogged, your Moss Ball will settle and remain at the bottom of your tank.
