Chinchilla Care Guide

Chinchillas are ideal pets for older children and teenagers. They are very timid and cannot be handled roughly but with regular gentle handing and care they become very tame.

How Do They Mix With Other Chinchillas?

Chinchillas are quite happy on their own but will mix well with same sex chinchillas as long as they are bought together or introduced when they are both still young and know each other.

Where do They Like to Live?

Chinchillas need a lot of space as they are quite active. Several levels in a cage is ideal as they like moving up and down. The cage should have a mesh floor which allows droppings to fall through onto wood shavings which keep the chinchillas cage clean. They like to have a little house in their cage to sleep in as they are nocturnal and sleep quite a lot during the day.

Chinchillas are especially sensitive to heat and as such ensure they are not kept beside a radiator or in direct sunlight and keep them out of draughty areas also.

What do They like to Eat?

Feed a good quality chinchilla food available here in Equipet. Avoid feeding fresh vegetables or fruit as this can cause stomach upsets. Hay needs to be provided as chinchilas require a source of long fibre. For a treat and variety you can give them a fruit stick.
Provide fresh water daily and remove uneaten food daily.

Handling your Chinchilla

Don’t disturb your chinchilla for 2 days so it gets used to its new surroundings. You can start then talking to your chinchilla and you can gently pick them up holding it firmly but gently. Never handle them roughly or allow very young children to handle them.

Cleaning your Cage

Ensure cage is also regularly cleaned and disinfected weekly.

Keeping your Chinchilla Healthy

Provide gnawing timber toys or mineral stones as chinchillas teeth are constantly growing and they need these to gnaw on.

Chinchillas enjoy a dust bath and this is ideal to keep their coats clean and shiny. Place a chinchilla bath full of sand or dust in the cage for your chinchilla twice a week

ideally. Always remove after 5 to 10 minutes or the chinchilla will use it as a toilet.

Healthy chinchillas have bright eyes, dry noses and shiny coats. The dust bath helps keep their coats clean and shiny.

Chinchillas can live for 15 to 20 years if properly cared for so they are quite a commitment.
