Equipet are proud to once again support International Helmet Awareness Day, which takes place on September 16 & 17th this year.

Organised and hosted by Riders4Helmets, the aim of International Helmet Awareness Day is to educate equestrians on the basic facts of wearing a helmet, to promote helmet wearing on an International level and to provide important links and resources to enable riders to become further educated on the importance of wearing a helmet.

Why should you wear a riding helmet?

A leading neurosurgeon from Vanderbilt University claims horseback riding is the number one cause of head injuries above any other sport. For that reason, all riders should wear a riding helmet whenever they partake in equestrian activities.
A recent survey conducted by Riders4Helmets showed that one of the main reasons that riders aren’t wearing a helmet when riding is that they think they are so experienced that they don’t need a helmet. Experienced riders will be riding faster and jumping higher and in the event of a fall would be launched from the horse making them as vulnerable, if not more, than a beginner rider.

How does a riding helmet work?

A properly fitted Riding Helmet helps to absorb any impact to the head and provides cushioning to the skull, reducing the risk of a serious head injury or even saving your life.
On impact, the helmet does two things. Firstly the shell diffuses the impact over a large area, secondly, the liner reduces bruising to the brain by increasing the length of time it takes you to stop. Basically, the hat liner collapses, protecting your head.

How to choose a riding helmet?

It is important when buying a riding helmet that it conforms to all current regulations. At Equipet we only supply riding hats & helmets that are up to the most recent PAS and BSEN standards and are BSI KITEMARK tested.

Getting fitted for a riding helmet?
An incorrectly fitted helmet offers no protection it is so important to make sure you are correctly fitted for riding equipment.
You should always buy your Riding Hat and Body Protector from somewhere with trained fitters. At Equipet, our staff have been BETA trained to fit both riding hats and body protectors.

Should I buy a second hand riding helmet?
While it can be tempting to pick up a second hand riding helmet it is strongly advised against. Even if the outer shell isn’t damaged it does not mean that the helmet hasn’t experienced any impact that would compromise you or your child’s safety.

This International Helmet Awareness Day we are offering 20% off all Riding Helmets instore and online, you can also avail of our free “Perfect Fit” measuring service in all our equestrian stores.
